Black River Middle School Grade 8 Tech Class ~ Dr. Seuss Collaborative Project

posted Apr 5, 2017, 7:24 AM by Lisa Patch BRHS

Students from the MSTech 8 class created pictures in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  These images were then scanned and emailed to a kindergarten class in Springfield, Vermont.
Students there were working on creating brief rhymes based on Dr. Seuss’ book There’s a Wocket in my Pocket.  The students created a rhyming sentence to go with the drawing and returned them to the students in MSTech8.

posted Apr 6, 2016, 8:19 AM by Lisa Patch BRHS   [ updated Apr 6, 2016, 8:19 AM ]

April 6, 2016 (from the Two Rivers Department of Program Effectiveness)
Last Wednesday I visited Anne Gardner's 8th grade class at Black River. Anne was facilitating a text protocol with her students to help them deconstruct an assessment they had just completed. The students analyzed how Anne wrote the prompt, and then compared it to a piece of student work to see how students in the past interpreted the same prompt. Anne then tasked the 8th graders with rewriting the prompt they had just analyzed in a way that would make sense to them. This analysis was to set the stage for students to design their own assessments.

On Friday I visited Marcia Dockum's Studio Art class at Black River. Marcia designed this class to give students the opportunity to explore art more deeply and independently than her other sections. In this class student choose a medium they want to spend time exploring and Marcia consults with them along the way. The options run from pottery to photography. The students are expected to self pace and self monitor as they produce each piece of art.

In one exercise they presented about an historical figure, in this case Louis XIV, and then they also had to translate an obituary into French. The students presented via Google docs and slides.

On Tuesday afternoon I visited Katherine Herrle's band class at Black River. The students were preparing for their first marching event of the year. In this class they were getting out for their first marching practice of the season. The students reviewed whistle commands and got a chance to hear how they sounded outside while moving. The class then moved back inside, the middle school students left and the high school practiced on their performance of Bohemian Rhapsody.

John Bannon's Media Literacy

posted Sep 23, 2015, 5:00 AM by Lisa Patch BRHS

September 17, 2015 (from the Two Rivers Department of Program Effectiveness)
On Wednesday morning I visited John Bannon's Media Literacy class at Black River. On this day the students were applying some of the concepts they learned about postmodernism by recording 4 short clips of themselves reciting a simple rhyme. In each one they tried to evoke a different mood by changing lighting, angle, music or the recitation itself. The students then edited the clips to prepare a class presentation of their interpretations.
